NAVIGATION COURSE.
The course aims to provide a grounding in
the map and compass skills necessary for accurate navigation in mountain
and moorland terrain.
Course Format.
One evening of theory followed by a full day's practical work in the Peak
District, usually a Saturday . Topics covered are as follows:

The grid system and grid references. |

Estimating and measuring distances. |

Which compass? |
|

Cardinal Points. |

Which North? Magnetic and Grid North. |
|

Taking a bearing. |
|
|
|
Map to ground navigation. |
|
|
|
Ground to map navigation. |

|
Estimating time and dead reckoning.. |

|
|
Pacing as an aid to navigation. |
Course Fee.
£10 payable in advance (non refundable from 2 weeks prior to course
date unless Foothills cancels) .
What You Will Need.

OS Outdoor Leisure/Explorer map 1, Dark
Peak. |

Map case, approved walking compass (
needed for the theory evening). |
|
3.

|
For the days practical on the moors,
appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn and a packed lunch
is also needed. |
